Everything you need to prepare for international travel — from documents and safety registration to health requirements and government resources.
Most countries require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date. Renew early — processing times can exceed 10–12 weeks during peak periods.
The U.S. State Department's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is free and takes 5 minutes. It allows the nearest Embassy to contact you during emergencies, natural disasters, or civil unrest.
Many countries now require advance travel authorization — ETIAS for Europe's Schengen Area, ETA for Canada and the UK, ESTA for return to the U.S. Apply weeks before departure, not the night before.
Most U.S. domestic health plans provide little to no coverage abroad. Travel insurance with emergency medical coverage is not optional — it's essential. Ms. Steph recommends Allianz and Faye.
Banks routinely freeze cards used in foreign countries as fraud prevention. Call or notify via app before departure. Carry at least two payment methods and some local currency.
The U.S. State Department issues Level 1–4 travel advisories for every country. Check travel.state.gov before booking and again 48 hours before departure for any updates.
